Capital to Country 2024: The Monkey Temple calm before the ultra running storm

It is hard to believe it has been a year since our inaugural Capital to Country Multi-Day Ultra took place in the beautiful foothills of Nepal.

And yet here we are. Winding our way through the streets of Kathmandu, meeting the city’s famous monkeys and preparing for five days of long distance running.

For those who don’t know, Capital to Country is a multi-day, 120-mile run which takes participants through the mesmerising foothills of Nepal, with stunning mountains as their backdrop.

Our runners will get the chance to immerse themselves in the local culture of this incredible country.

This year’s adventure started with a walk up to Kathmandu’s Monkey Temple. Known locally as Swayambhunath Stupa, it has been home to monkeys for centuries, many of whom wait patiently to pounce on the food and drink of tourists – and ultra runners – foolish enough to leave anything close to their grasp.

There are a few pre-ultra steps to get over on the way up to the temple, but the views over Kathmandu are well worth it. It certainly never fails to disappoint and is an awe-inspiring start to what will be an epic trip across Nepal.

A little retail therapy on the busy streets of Kathmandu followed, before a final kit check.

Race day one saw us departing Kathmandu for the ancient district of Sankhu. We’ll be keeping you up date with the adventure here, as well as on our Facebook and Instagram pages – with plenty more breathtaking photography from our intrepid photographer Adrian Howes, who will be taking to the back of a motorbike to capture some amazing images along the way.
